Project

Transmettre - Transmit encompasses a wide-ranging arts programme on both sides of the Channel, in Northern France and in Kent, in 2007 and 2008. This cross-border collaboration is based on the joint work of the Espace 36, association of contemporary art in Saint-Omer and DAD (Dover Arts Development), in Dover District. The aim of the project is to offer the public of Dover District and of the Audomarois, a region of Saint-Omer, contemporary art events at heritage sites around a unifying theme.

Eight French and English artists have created site-specific work for the Chapel of the former College of the Jesuits at Saint-Omer and castles of Dover, Walmer and Deal, taking as the basis for their reflections the word "transmit". The theme is examined in two critical texts by Christiane Vollaire, philosopher of aesthetics and Virginia Whiles, art historian, critic and curator.

Transmettre/Transmit also includes an educational programme for local schools on both sides of the Channel, comprising arts workshops in Saint-Omer and work with four Dover District schools in Dover District; a university seminar in Saint-Omer examining the global transmission of practice and a symposium in Dover District which will look at how specialist arts and cultural organisations have benefited from European funding and how this may enable them to extend their cross-border partnerships in the future.
